US Kerry Lugar Bill for Pakistan aid

Congress to Vote on Bill to Triple Aid to Pak
The US House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a bill to triple non-military aid to Pakistan to USD7.5 billion in the next five years with riders demanding strong counter-terrorism measures and preventing attacks on the West or its neighbours like India.
The bill also says the US President has to report annually that Pakistan is making progress on counter-terrorism measures and is not letting its soil being used by Al Qaeda, Taliban and other terrorist groups against other countries.
The Senate passed the bill unanimously last week and after the expected approval of the bill by the House of Representatives Wednesday (Thursday India time), it would be sent to the White House for President Barack Obama's signature to turn it into a law.
With the passage of the bill, the Obama Administration will prevail over the opposition to it coming from several members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, who were seeking to include harsh conditions into it.
With a bitter past experience wherein the US aid money was being diverted for purposes other than it was meant for, lawmakers wanted to make provisions in the bill so that this cannot be repeated.
The House Majority Leader, Steny H Hoyer, said the bill (Number S 1707) has been scheduled last in a list of 17 bills to be taken up for discussion and vote on Wednesday.
It was initially introduced in the Senate by Vice President Joe Biden, then in the capacity as the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; and its ranking member, Senator Dick Lugar.
Since then the bill has seen several changes and is now called Kerry-Lugar bill as it has been introduced by Senator John Kerry, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Senator Lugar.
Under the bill, the Congress will not only triple civilian aid to Pakistan for the next five years, but also provide assistance to support its democratic institutions, strengthen public diplomacy to combat militant extremism and promote a better understanding of the United States.
It also authorizes appropriations for assistance to Pakistan under the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, including: international military education and training (IMET); and foreign military financing for the purchase of defence articles and services, among other things.

Duminy predicts Australia-Pak final in ICC Champions Trophy

Yahoonews, PTI, 28 September 2009

Joahnnesburg: His team out of the tournament after a 22-run defeat against England, South African middle order batsman JP Duminy has predicted that Pakistan would win ICC the Champions Trophy here.

"With us now on our way to our respective homes, my tournament prediction for the final is: Australia vs Pakistan. They are looking like the form team of the tournament," he said.

Duminy said he was hugely disappointed at South Africa having failed to do well in the tournament at home.

"The disappointment levels are huge, especially coming so close on the back of the ICC World Twenty20 exit. I took that defeat very personally, but this one has really hit as a team. After all the hype of coming into the ICC Champions Trophy as the No. 1 team in the world, and then to end last in our group is hugely disappointing."

"We know we have let a lot of people down. The tournament is in our backyard and we really wanted to give the people of South Africa something to celebrate," he wrote in his column for 'Independent Online'.

Iran tests most advanced missiles

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran tested its most advanced missiles Monday to cap two days of war games, raising more international concern and stronger pressure to quickly come clean on the newly revealed nuclear site Tehran was secretly constructing. State television said the powerful Revolutionary Guard, which controls Iran's missile program, successfully tested upgraded versions of the medium-range Shahab-3 and Sajjil missiles. Both can carry warheads and reach up to 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers), putting Israel, U.S. military bases in the Middle East, and parts of Europe within striking distance.

The missile tests were meant to flex Iran's military might and show readiness for any military threat.

"Iranian missiles are able to target any place that threatens Iran," said Abdollah Araqi, a top Revolutionary Guard commander, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.

Iran conducted three rounds of missile tests in drills that began Sunday, two days after the U.S. and its allies disclosed the country had been secretly developing an underground uranium enrichment facility. The Western powers warned Iran it must open the site to international inspection or face harsher international sanctions.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hasan Qashqavi said the missile tests had nothing to do with the tension over the site, saying it was part of routine, long-planned military exercises.

European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana said he was concerned about the missile tests. He said Iran must immediately resolve issues surrounding its second nuclear enrichment facility with the U.N.'s nuclear agency.

The newly revealed nuclear site has given greater urgency to a key meeting on Thursday in Geneva between Iran and six major powers trying to stop its suspected nuclear weapons program. Solana said those talks are now taking place "in a new context."

Britain said Monday's test further illustrates why Europe and the U.S. have serious concerns about Iran's nuclear intentions, and France called it a provocation.

"This sends the wrong signal to the international community at a time when Iran is due to meet" the six world powers, Britain's Foreign Office said. The six nations are the U.S., Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said she doesn't believe Iran can convince the U.S. and other world powers at the upcoming meeting that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, as Tehran has long claimed. That puts Tehran on a course for tougher economic penalties beyond the current "leaky sanctions," she said. The nuclear site is located in the arid mountains near the holy city of Qom and is believed to be inside a heavily guarded, underground facility belonging to the Revolutionary Guard, according to a document sent by President Barack Obama's administration to lawmakers.

Qashqavi, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, identified the site as Fordo, a village located 110 miles (180 kilometers) south of the capital, Tehran. The site is 60 miles (100 kilometers) from Natanz, Iran's known industrial-scale uranium enrichment plant.

After strong condemnations from the U.S. and its allies, Iran said Saturday it will allow U.N. nuclear inspectors to examine the site. Israel has trumpeted the latest discoveries as proof of its long-held assertion that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons. By U.S. estimates, Iran is one to five years away from having nuclear weapons capability, although U.S. intelligence also believes that Iranian leaders have not yet made the decision to build a weapon.

Iran also is developing ballistic missiles that could carry a nuclear warhead. A U.S. intelligence assessment in May, however, said Iran had slowed work on its long-range ballistic missiles and was instead focusing efforts on short- and medium-range missiles like the Shahab.

That assessment paved the way for Obama's decision to shelve the Bush administration's plan for a missile shield in Europe, which was aimed at defending against Iranian intercontinental ballistic missiles. Iran is not expected to have such a missile until 2015 to 2020, according to the report, which was described by a U.S. government official on condition of anonymity because the report is classified. The Sajjil-2 missile is Iran's most advanced two-stage surface-to-surface missile and is powered entirely by solid-fuel while the older Shahab-3 uses a combination of solid and liquid fuel in its most advanced form, which is also known as the Qadr-F1.

Solid fuel is seen as a technological breakthrough for any missile program as solid fuel increases the accuracy of missiles in reaching targets.

Experts say Sajjil-2 is more accurate than Shahab missiles and its navigation system is more advanced. State media reported tests overnight of the Shahab-1 and Shahab-2 missiles, with ranges of 185 miles (300 kilometers) and 435 miles (700 kilometers) respectively. That followed tests early Sunday of the short range Fateh, Tondar and Zelzal missiles, which have a range of 120 miles (193 kilometers), 93 miles (150 kilometers) and 130 miles (200 kilometers) respectively.

Iran's last known missile tests were in May when it fired its longest-range solid-fuel missile, Sajjil-2. Tehran said the two-stage surface-to-surface missile has a range of about 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometers) — capable of striking Israel, U.S. Mideast bases and southeastern Europe.

1 soldier died for every 4 votes cast in Helmand and 1 and 1/3 Men were wounded per vote cast!

Afghanistan - Now that the dust is starting to settle on the fake election in Afghanistan, the true extent of the failure of the US lead NATO mission in Afghanistan has been exposed for all to see.

Operation Panthers Claw, Oh how the military loves such impressive sounding names for military actions, should be re-named operation withdraw bloody stump. This would demonstrate the true extent of its futility.

During the two months of 'Panthers Claw' the British military has lost 37 men killed and an estimated 200 wounded in Helmand province so that the 80,000 Afghans who live along the Helmand river would feel secure enough in the protection provided by the British forces against reprisals from the Taliban could vote in an obviously rigged election so that NATO can pretend that Afghanistan is not occupied.

Well the Afghans voted with their fingers. Only 150 out of the 80,000 voted. The Taliban has already released video of its men amputating the fingers of any Afghans who they caught with the tell tale election ink on them.

Which ever way you add things up, that is 4 votes for every dead British soldier and 1 and 1/3 of a British Soldier wounded for every vote. That is a humiliating defeat for the Military. A military miscalculation of the scale of the first day of the battle of the Somme.

If only 150 out of the 80,000 are for you then 79,850 are against you. Yes that does mean that 79,850 Afghans by not voting for the NATO approved puppets, voted for the Taliban.

It is time to pull out of this futile war of US imperialism, and leave the Yankees to it. It is their war of choice, and it was lost because GW Bush wanted another war in Iraq. No amount of NATO involvement will turn the situation round.

The Politicians, especially 'Wanker' Brown and Bob Ainsworth, are in total denial about this mess of their own making, and as far as the rest of us are concerned they are dead men walking, until the election puts them out of their misery.

Three more US Banks Closed by the FDIC

USA - Regulators have closed 3 more banks in the USA Friday. This takes the total of failed banks to 84 so far this year, and 15 so far this month. There were just 25 banks seized in all of 2008, and only three in 2007.

At this rate there will be well over 100 banks failing by the end of the year.

In July alone, there have been 23 bank failures.

On Friday, August 28, 2009, Affinity Bank, Ventura, CA was closed by the California Department of Financial Institutions, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was named Receiver.

Pacific Western Bank of San Diego will assume the deposits of Affinity Bank, the FDIC said. Affinity, with $1 billion in assets and $922 million in deposits, had 10 branches. Two, based in San Mateo and San Francisco, will open today as Pacific Western branches; the rest will open Aug. 31 under new ownership, according to the FDIC. The regulator agreed to share losses on $934 million of the assets.

On Friday, August 28, 2009, Bradford Bank, Baltimore, MD was closed by the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS), and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was named Receiver.
Manufacturers & Traders Trust Co. of Buffalo, New York, took over the deposits of Bradford Bank, the FDIC said. M&T, whose parent counts billionaire investor Warren Buffett among its biggest shareholders, is buying Bradford’s $383 million of deposits and $452 million in assets. The FDIC is sharing losses on $338 million of assets in the deal.

On Friday, August 28, 2009, Mainstreet Bank, Forest Lake, MN was closed by the Minnesota Department of Commerce, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was named Receiver.

Central Bank of Stillwater, Minnesota, assumed $434 million in deposits at Mainstreet Bank, the FDIC said. Central Bank will pay a premium to purchase Mainstreet’s $459 million in assets, with the FDIC sharing losses on about $268 million. Mainstreet’s eight branches will open today as Central offices.

The failures are expected to cost the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) a total of about $446 million.
