he number of new cars registered last month more than doubled compared with the same month last year, according to official figures released today.
The Central Statistics Office said 4,683 new cars were recorded in September, up 106% from 2,272 in the same month last year.
The CSO points out, however, that last September's figure was the lowest for any September since 1967.
The CSO figures are broadly in line with figures from the motor industry released earlier this month. Car sales have been rising this year, helped by the scrappage scheme introduced in the last Budget.
A breakdown of the CSO figures showed that only 30% of the new cars ran on petrol, with 64% powered by diesel. Renault led the way with 752 new cars, followed by Toyota (681), Volkswagen (479) and Ford (432).
78,372 new cars have been registered so far this year, up 52% on the same period last year.
